Does an American Express Gift Card expire?

The funds on your gift card never expire, but there is a “valid thru” date associated with each card. Your card will not work after this date. However, Amex will issue another card free of charge if you still have funds connected with the card. Just contact customer service should you encounter these issues.

These prepaid payment cards can be used virtually everywhere American Express Cards are accepted within the United States. Simply place items in your shopping cart when shopping on your preferred website. Then proceed to checkout and enter the card number, 4-digit security code (CVC), and expiration date to pay with your prepaid card balance. The gift card cannot be used for recurring payments (like a subscription) or at ATMs. Additionally, your eGift Card cannot be used for transactions that require the use of a physical card. Note: Some online retailers do not accept “split tender” payments with a gift card. Your card could be declined if there aren’t enough available funds to cover the amount of your purchase or a pre-authorization request from the merchant. Be sure to know your balance before making a purchase and that your available gift card funds can completely cover the total if this is the case.

If your Gift Card was purchased at Amex Gift Card, in most cases, the eCard is ready for use immediately. You may activate your Card by signing in to the check balance subpage with your Card details. You will need to provide your Card number, valid thru date, and security code accompanying your Gift Card.

Yes, you can use your Amex Gift Card as payment on Amazon.com (US). However, Amazon does not allow “split tender” payments with gift cards. The entire amount must be able to be deducted from the gift card. It is also possible Amazon has a temporary $1 authorization on the gift card the first time it is used. So be sure your purchase total accounts for this hold. An alternative solution is to buy an Amazon Gift Card with your Amex prepaid card balance.
